2 min video best compression

I have been asked to take a 2.5 min SD clip and get it under 10mb. It needs to play on an iPad. Working with OS X and FCP7.

What would be a reasonable size to expect. I have gotten it down to 33mb but the quality is AWFUL! Any suggestions?

Simple match especially with a bit rate calculator

2:30 at 10MB would be about 550kbps. At 640x480 (SD you said) using H.264 MainProfile Multipass VBR that should be OK although it depends on content. Not great for fast motion but passable for most other purposes.

Yup that is the exact issue we are having. Our content is sports highlights so its pretty fast motion.

For titles and such it's fine, but our quality when we cut it down to 30mb is just not acceptable.

Would sorenson squeeze or something else like that help us any?

Settings and encoder are key.

Apple's H.264 is the worst at low bit rate.

MainConcept used by Telestream Episode and Sorenson Squeeze are better.

x264 which can be accessed by various encoders is very good at low bit rates.

Settings are crucial though. MainProfile will look better than Baseline. Two or Multipass encodes will look better. Using CABAC entropy will be better than CAVLC. I'd use both natural (at edit points) and forced (at set distance which you can experiment with) will help.
