No audio conversion m4v to mov in mpegstreamclip
on Feb 5, 2011 at 12:26:17 pm

Hi guys,

I'm shot some footage with a Sony NEXVG10, and now I'm trying to import it into Premiere Pro.
Due to time constraints, I just copied the MTS files instead of importing them properly. I converted them to m4v. I get audio in VLC, but not in an other player. When I try to convert them to DNxHD in mpeg streamclip, I don't get audio in the final MOV's.

Any clues?

Mpeg Streamclip doesn't play the audio? My guess is that your system doesn't have anything that can decode AC-3 audio. Do you have any other compression tools around? Have you tried using Adobe Media Encoder? I assume you're using the Avid codec as a compressed HD format?

Why are you converting .mts to .m4v?
I don't fathom a reason for that. .m4v is for playback generally on iOS devices and is actually .mp4

Can you play the .mts in MPEGStreamclip?
If so convert with that to a codec and wrapper you can use in Premiere.

Thanks for your responses.

Jeff, I've tried installing multiple AC3 codecs, but none of them seem to work. All I find is Perian, which wouldn't work on my windows. Is there an alternative?
And yes, I'm trying to convert to DNxHD to get workable files.

Craig, a friend gave me my material after he converted it to m4v. Don't really know why he did that. So I don't have the original MTS files.

The only program I can get the files to display video & audio is VLC, so I guess they have a codec on board.

So, I guess the thing I need is the right codec. Know which one would help?

I've tried CCCP, FFD Show, AC Filter

Do the .m4v play in iTunes and/or Quicktime on Windows?
.m4v are generally .mp4 and this is one of those times where you should be able to change the extension if that helps.

Once you change the extension to .mp4 see if WMP12 (Windows 7) can play the files so that you can hear the audio. If you can get to this point it might open some doors to some options.

Play .m4v in iTunes or Quicktime 7.6.x
If the above works, change the extension of one .m4v to .mp4
Play .mp4 in WMP 12 on Windows 7 (must be WMP12 and not an earlier version so it must be Windows 7).
If that works we'll investigate next steps.

Hej Craig, thanks.

I only have windows vista, so can't try the things you proposed. I did try to change it to mp4, but that doesn't change anything: only audio in VLC. (Although I got some easier playback in the other players, but still mute.)

Microsoft didn't add H.264 .mp4 support until WMP12 Windows 7. You're going to have a challenge trying to solve this on Vista. I'm not sure but it may well be a licensing issue with the use of the AAC codec for audio.

Since it's .m4v have you tried importing and playing it in the current version of iTunes?

Thanks for your help so far, Craig. iTunes doesn't play audio, as well as an mp4 as m4v.

Licensing problem? How would i fix that?

That file is not a proper .m4v if iTunes doesn't play the audio.

The specs yo posted are odd.
An .m4v from Apple Compressor Apple TV preset would be:
Main@L.3.1
CABAC: No
AAC MPEG4 Audio
44.1kHz

It looks almost like a botch job of converting a DVD in Handbreak with settings that don't' target anything that I can think of that's rational.

AC3 48kHz is typical of DVD audio.
.m4v is specific to iOS and iTunes
CABAC Yes would generally not be common to iOS device encodes

The combination is a hodgepodge not normally used. You may have a hard time finding a compression app that can handle it.
You might try downloading a trial of Telestream Episode.
You could try VirtualDub

I'm not sure what your friend's intent was so you may consider asking him for a solution or a properly encoded file. I know if a client handed me a file like this I'd certainly bill them for all this extra work.

A worse case scenario is that you'll have to play it in VLC and do a screen capture.
