most desirable codec for compression of a two-minute long DV video

hey,

I'm doing a video piece that is a little over two minutes long for web release. Ideally, I'd like to skirt around using YouTube or Vimeo and embed the video via QuickTime directly in the web page. It's been a while since I've had to do something like this (if I had to do any compression at all I would just export for use in YouTube or Vimeo). Is H.264 the most desirable option? It has been churning out a file size of about 170MB for my 2 minute movie. That said, it's hard to really tell what the standard is for web video these days, and if the video will load quickly or slowly.

Sorry if this question has been asked already, I searched but I'd rather have an answer that best suits my personal situation if possible.

(Please don't suggest just using YouTube or Vimeo, I plan on including a Youtube and Vimeo link as well)

Thanks,
Joe

H.264 is the best option. I'd consider H.264 .mp4 over .mov if possible. It'll give you some flexibility to use other types of embeds at some point. H.264 not only works in Quicktime, it also works in Windows Media Player 12, Flash, Silverlight, HTML5 (sans those WebM only browsers).

Everything Glen says is dead on...

One thought - what's the data rate you're working at?
What kind of source (size, frame rate, codec, editorial tool?)
The data rate looks like its 11.7 mb/s, which might be a bit high depending on your starting point. You might be able to knock it down as low as 4-6 mb/s for an HD clip and get a file 1/2 as large.

Nice.

I'm working in standard DV NTSC video, so 29.97 fps, 720x480, and it was cut in FCP.

Since it's SD, you could even drop the data rate as low as 1mb/s.
