WMV9 Screen to .mov?
on Oct 20, 2010 at 6:53:14 pm

Hello. I have a "wmv9 screen" file that I can't view on OSX. I do have Parallels and can view the file there, but I have no idea how to export it to use on OSX. It's embarrassing, but I am totally windows deficient.

Any suggestions on how to convert this?

Jeremy

Do you have Windows 7? Expression Encoder (free version) includes a screen capture program (up to 10 minutes or so I believe). Record it and bring it over to the Mac.

If you have to do stuff like this often, the paid version of Expression Encoder can encode to H.264 .mp4

Thanks for the response. I have XP.

I thought about something like that. I can run ScreenFlow for Mac (in coherence mode/Parallels) and screen cap that way, but that means going to ScreenFlow then to ProRes or whatever.

I was hoping to somehow just convert this wmv file to save generation loss (the file is already compromised). Are there no windows utilities that allow exporting?

Maybe I'll try MPEG Streamclip for windows.

ScreenFlow capturing Windows XP in Parallels would certainly work.
On Windows XP you can use the free Windows Media Encoder and encode to WMV9 (standard) which would play on Mac with the free Flip4Mac (which doesn't support Windows Media Screen . . . nothing does on Mac).

Either way you face another round of compression. I'm not sure which would look better.

Thank you. Perhaps I'll check that route out as well.

Much appreciated.

ScreenFlow worked pretty well. I think it's good enough for this.

Thanks for talking me through it.
