Mpeg2 compression blurry, squeezes video?? AE or Premiere
on Jul 26, 2010 at 8:37:27 pm

Hey guys, long time reader first time poster heh. I was wondering if anyone could help me with this. I'm trying to export a High Quality .Mov clip 600+ MB into a Mpeg2 format. My client wants me to deliver the video strictly in .mpg format..but when I export the original mov video to such format...the image looks blurry and kind of squeezed up..I tried modifying the bitrate settings to get a better quality but the problem persists...My original video is a normal NTSC 720x480 in Mov format and looks fine but when exporting to MPEG it seems that the aspect ratio is not correct or at least it doesn't look as the same proportions as the original one. how can I fix it?

I tried this in Afx and Premiere but the results are the same..any ideas??

any help very much appreciated!

Hey, have you tried MainConcept Reference? I’ve been playing with it for a while and it supports pretty much any format you might need, including the biggies (H.264/AVC, MPEG-2, etc.) with presets for the most popular playback devices, e.g. iPod, PSP, Blu-ray Disc... I've gotten some very nice DVD-ready video out of it. Start with the free demo version at http://www.mainconcept.com/products/apps-plug-ins/reference.html and add more codecs as you need 'em.

We need more information about what you're using to compress it with, what flavor of MPG you're exporting to (MPEG2, MP4), and any other settings in your export, especially aspect ratio.

Also...is your original footage 4:3 or 16:9?

In your export settings dialogue (on the right), in the comments section it says:

"set frame size to 720x480 in the stretch options in the output module before encoding..."

So it appears to me you need to check "stretch" in your dialogue on the left, then change the aspect to 4:3 there too.

I have no idea why you'd need to do that but the export dialogue is telling you to...so you should do it. Is that Premiere or AE that you're exporting from? It looks like an Adobe Media Encoder dialogue. I've always hated their encoder and it's always (in my opinion) been a quirky beast, with all sorts of oddities (like this one).

Try doing what it says and see what you get.

@Chris...oh, yeah I forgot to mention I did try the stretch thing but got the same results :/..I also thought it was odd.. why stretch a 720x480 to 720x480? isn't it already that size? (the option doesn't make sense)...The screenshot was taken directly from the After fx CS3 output module..but I tried also compressing the vid in Premiere and the output dialog is the same and so are the results..blurry stretched video :/

Do you have a choice of which MPEG2 codec to use? I can't imagine that would have anything to do with it...but worth a shot.

The only other thing I can think of is your AE comp has some incorrect settings, either pixel aspect or pixel size etc. Also, are you sure you haven't somehow scaled in the AE timeline??

Hi Chris, I looked for some option to control the codec but I couldn't find it..the only thing I found out was that disabling audio would automatically result in the file outputting to .m2v..other than that there's no options. I'm sure my comp isn't scaled...I only use presets for comps so both comps are under NTSC DV 720x480 29.97..same aspect radio 3:2 etc.. that's what puzzles me :/
maybe the solution is just using another method to compress like Media Encoder but as I mentioned earlier they don't have this software here at my workplace

Aspect ratio for 720x480 DV should be either 4:3 or 16:9...not 3:2. Maybe that's the problem. Also make sure your field order interpolation in AE and field order in our encode match.

yes sorry meant to say 4:3..not 3:2...I've been using the standard settings to compress. I think I'll try compressing with adobe media encoder maybe that will help

thanks
