23.97 canon 7d to DVD
on Jun 30, 2010 at 11:13:35 am

Hi guys

I am currently finishing up a project shot on a canon 7d @ 23.97p having a headache getting it on to DVD.

I have to encode my edit to NTSC DVDs for playback in the USA (I’m in England). I have edited using XDCAM EX proxies at 24p (QT reports the files run at 23.97) and before you say it – I know I should have used prores!

I am having some success using Compressor, however, I’m not really sure what I’m doing so after confusing myself with research I thought I might ask the pros.

- Do I need to transcode my 23.97p material to 29.97p for ntsc playback? If so, how do I do that in Compressor?
- Can DVD players produce interlaced frames for non progressive TVs? i.e if I don’t transcode my project to 29.97 and just tell compressor to make the disc as 23.97p will it work on a non-progressive player/TV?
- The test I did seemed to work (though I don’t know how) why does my ntsc project playback on my pal DVD player and 4:3 CRT TV? Are all DVD players able to convert now? I couldn’t find anything about my player being able to do NTSC.

Thanks guys, this is messing with my head!

I do not believe you need to do this. Most DVD players will add pulldown. I could be wrong on this but I recall Noah Kadner (a long-time Cow member) answering this question a while back and I believe he recommended just keeping it at 24p.

Yes. It won't change from interlaced to progressive or anything like that, but it should playback fine on older televisions.

No they are not generally able to convert. Maybe you have a PAL DVD player that can playback NTSC??

Thanks Chris,

What you said seems to tie up with my tests - thanks. I left my project at 24p and it played fine on my crt tv.

If I keep everything at 24p, does this mean that I have a universal solution for playback - i.e on both pal and ntsc systems, because the DVD player will either pull down to 25 or 29.97 depending on the regional system?

Thanks for your help!

Dan

Dan,

Just noticed your question about whether the 24P will translate to both NTSC and PAL. I'm pretty sure the answer is NO. PAL standard definition is not only 25fps, it's also a different pixel resolution, so your NTSC project would not play properly on a PAL DVD player...UNLESS the DVD player can do standards conversion (which some higher-end ones can). But standards conversion left to a DVD player usually uses a cheap chip which results in a poor quality conversion.

You'd have to convert your NTSC project to PAL...but shooting and keeping it at 24P makes the frame rate change the much easier since it's so close to begin with.
