Serious playback issue on Quicktime MOV and Raw Video File
on Jan 18, 2010 at 3:56:38 pm

Hello, and please forgive me if this is the wrong forum on which to share my problem.

I do sporadic editing and video tasks at work and I'm told to do a quick edit of a compressed file. I find that it plays only black with audio only, obviously a codec issue.

Before I go on I'm working on a:

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,5
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 8 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz

The stats of the uncompressed file I'm working with:

*** General Parameters ***
- Name: 30X__The_Movie.mov
- Container: MOV - QuickTime
- Creation Date: 2010-01-15 9:44:14 AM

*** Video Track Parameters ***
- Format: RAW
- Size: 1.18 GiB (100%)
- FourCC: raw
- Track number(s): 1

- Display aspect ratio: 1.481
- Chroma subsampling format: Undefined

The stats of the compressed QT are as follows:

Arguably it's stupid to encode motion with an animation codec, that much I know, so it's possible the people at [TV station] have no idea what they're doing and sent me a crap file. Anyway...

I try to load the raw clip and it tends to crash what its imported in.

My QT player is updated, everything on the QT end is current to my knowledge. On another big video dev box the files play fine (though with some nasty interlacing). I am at a loss as to what codec I need to get this thing running normally on my box.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Any guidance would be enormously appreciated.

Jonah

... and reading more about QT Animation Codec on here I find that it is I who know nothing about what I'm talking about. :)
Still, it should play, right?

I forgot to mention that when I import the files in FC they can be played after I convert them to the appropriate codec, but when I save the project and export the clip I still only get black w/ audio.

[Jonah Gruber] "The stats of the compressed QT are as follows:"

[Jonah Gruber] "Bitrate: 244 Mbps "

Reduce that considerably and you should be fine, you are dealing with what is considered near the data rate for uncompressed SD video (270Mb/s).

Thank you! And sorry for the late-ish reply. Turns out they didn't even send the correct video to us.

This is good to know however, and I'll take it into account if I have the problem again.
