Removing 3:2 Pulldown

I have a general question about how 3:2 pulldown removal works with a codec. I will be using either Squeeze or Compressor for this process.

I have a fully edited sequence (29.97) that I need to convert back to 24P. Footage was shot on a RED at 24P, sent off for color correction and transcoded to ProResHQ at 29.97.

How will encoders handle the pulldown removal? Do they detect the cadence early on in the encode pass? Since this is a final edit, the cadence of the source footage will not remain constant though the edit. Will the encoder handle it correctly?

Also, how is the 29.97 footage (the footage with pulldown) affected when it's time remapped? Won't this screw with the frames or give poor results?

I found a solution to part of this question. If the 3:2 cadence is broken, Compressor will detect and compensate. I can't confirm about other compression apps.

Article on Ken Stone's site says otherwise regarding broken cadence. Ideas anyone?

"NOTE: This will only work if the material has a consistent cadence (pattern) to the pulldown. If that pattern changes on edits, then there is little that can be done to "repair" the situation. The risk of broken cadence on edits is why all 24P source must be edited in a 23.98 Sequence, not a regular NTSC 29.97 fps Sequence. "

Compressor actually isn't removing the pulldown.
