still some flicker from compressor
on Oct 21, 2009 at 2:29:54 am

i have been testing for many hours and overall i am getting some good results converting footage from the PD 150 in to progressive. but... there are still a few areas with very distracting flicker. mainly when there is a pan up and down that runs over horizontal lines. there must be a way to tackle these suckers. i was playing around with the anti-alias and details sliders but after checking with the manual, looks like those are only for resizing issues. i have also just been going back to the DV NTSC codec, animation didnt seem to add much except file size.

here is one spot that has been very persistent:

somewhat ugly in the lower left, no ?

i should mention that the final destination for this file is playback through VLC on a Mac laptop to a projector.

Have you applied any deinterlacing in frame controls?

yes, and i have tried both better and best. the deinterlacing got rid of a huge portion of the jaggies and as i say, a lot of it looks good, there are just these one or two areas where it sticks out.

Try using a frame size of 856x480, then both sides are equally divisible by 8, which is an important rule to follow.

One rule of thumb with video is to never ever use odd number frame size dimensions.

The next rule is to aim for a frame size with both sides equally divisible by 16, if that's not possible, aim for 8.

[mark wilkinson] "strange that even the apple presets aren't 856... "

Much as I love Apple, they can't even come out with a decent H.264 CODEC, theirs being one of the lowest quality and performing ones out there.

P.S. Never rely on a preset unless they are from these guys:
