Closed Captioning for other than MPEG-2?
on Jun 1, 2009 at 8:12:14 pm

Hey there,

The government agency I'm working for is looking to post some videos online, but they need to be 508 compliant (ie...closed captioned). I'm familiar with the process when doing close captioning to a DVD, but is there any technique (or is it possible) to link or embed a close captioned text file to different compressed video formats...such as MPEG-4 or WMV?

Thanks,

Brad

Hi Brad, I don't think there is a way to preserve or include captions with MPEG4 or WMV without using open captions (ie. having the captions displayed over the video as part of the video itself). You can do it with Flash, however. This was discussed over in the Corporate Video forum (http://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/12/856301) a few weeks back and Jeff Breuer gave some good notes on how to accomplish it. Hope this helps.

Matt
