MP4 H264 Codec playing back unpredictably
on Feb 16, 2009 at 10:18:09 pm

I currently work in Arch Visualization and am not very familar with codecs.

Recently I have been trying to to write out an mpeg4/ HD H264/ 30 fps out of the Sorenson Squeeze trial.

The video plays back on quicktime on my computer back horrible
It constantly stutters like it is lagging out.

But when I play it back on this cheap standalone player.

"Western Digital - WD TV HD Media Player for USB Storage Devices
Model: WDAVN00BN | SKU: 8993217 "
Link = http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8993217&st=hd+player&type=pro...

It plays back wonderfully I do not understand why at all. I have a pretty good computer:

Microsoft Windows XP /Profession x64 Edition / Version 2003
Service Pack2 /Computer Inter(r) Xeon(r) CPU /X5355 @2.66GHz
2066 GHz, 8.00 GB Ram/ Nvidia Quadro FX 4500

HD - Quicktime movie trailers also playback awesome.
I am confused and would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions anyone would give.

Have you tried playing it back on your PC using VLC?

Thanks,
Just tried playing it back on VLC.
I got a significant better result only slightly choppy every once in a while. Seems to be random now where the picture will sort of jolt.

Now I am really confused.

Ideally I would want the video to be able to be played back through QuickTime since most people would not be familiar with VLC

More Info: The original video was created out of frames rendered then exported out of premiere as Quicktime Animation.
Next the video is exported out of sorenson media encoder under the preset for Bluray 720P - Mpeg4 the only setting changed was the frame rate to 30fps to match the existing speed of my footage.

I am not sure why quicktime can not play it back smoothly?
I am still confused on why the video would randomly jolt yet still play back smooth on the usb player?
Especially since movie trailers from quicktime that are encoded H264 playback well.
I realize I am likely missing something simple just not sure what.
I appreciate the help.

It could be that your data rate is too high if you chose a BluRay spec profile - What is the datarate set to?

The Profile Name is BD_720p24

Format Constraints: None
Stream Type: Non-Streaming (Not Hinted)

Audio Side
(Audio: Checked On

Codec: ATSC A/52
Data Rate: 640kps
Sample Size: 16
Sample Rate: 4800
Channels: 5.1 )

Video Side
(Video: Checked On
Codec: MainConcept H.264
Method: 2-PassVBR
Data Rate 10400 Kps
Frame Size: 1280W x 720H
Display Aspect Ratio Policy: Letter Box or Pillar
Frame Rate: 30 FPS (The Preset was Originally 24fps))

Only thing altered from the preset was the frame rate
The original file is 720P in size with a square aspect ratio.
Their is no audio in the original format

Thanks for taking the time to help me out.

Any keyframe or IDR settings available?

Try knocking the datarate down to 5000K/s - It'll likely affect the quality some but at least we'll see if plays better.

IIRC the Apple trailers at 1080p are encoded at around 10Mb/s

Sorry did not do the advanced tab

Here it is:

(Key Frame Every: 240 Frames
Auto Key Frame on Scene Change: Checked
Slider between Rare and Frequent is set to:50

AVC Profile: High
Interlace Mode: Progressive
Field Order: Greyed Out
Encoding Effort: Best
B-Frames: 2
CABAC Coding: No
Slices: 0)

I am going to send a test now with the data rate knocked down.

I sent a file with the data rate knocked down to 5000
It plays a little smoother but still jolts, just not as much.

So I'm guessing it is related to one of the other settings.

Mmmmm, all the other settings seem fine.

I assume you unchecked audio encoding seeing there is none in the source.

Have you tried playing it back on another PC?

Is there a bunch of stuff running in the background on your PC?

Grabbing at straws here as all would appear ok from your settings.

Try another test using CBR, or lower the peak setting of your VBR datarate

Just tried it on another machine. Same problems.

Playing it back as a mpeg2 at 30 fps gives much better results.
I get even better results changing the setting to mpeg2 60fps with same play back speed.
Thou it still jolts a little in similar locations it is much harder to tell.

There is no motion blur on the renders.
Would that have anything to do with my problems?

Thanks again

Quicktime plays choppy on my computer also, but the same videos seem to play well on other computers. I started experiencing this when I changed to Windows vista x64. I don't know if that's it or not.
