Flash video to large for "average computer" processing
on Dec 30, 2008 at 1:29:07 am

Hello
We're trying to get some really good hd video on the web.
Our test video was 3000K, 1280x720, vp6, compressed with squeeze. It downloads fast enough for realtime viewing, but when you go to full screen, the frame rate really drops. Obviously computer processing power isn't great enough. But I'm testing with a g5 and quad core 2.4 running vista. surely most other average computers wont be able to handle.
any solutions for a easier codec? or am i limited by technology for what I want?
I know there are other websites with great looking hd video such as http://exposureroom.com

Hey Cade,
Many of the HD or full-size videos you see on the net are using Flash Media Streaming Server, which has the capability to detect what type of machine the clip is being played on and will scale the video for the best possible results.
1280x720 is bigger than most people's screen resolutions. You may have to consider re-encoding down so the average joe can play it.

Flash is terribly inefficient when it comes to displaying video and some Flash players are more efficient than others, it may be that the one you are using is not the most efficient.

You'll probably find that you can easily play the HD Quicktime trailers here:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/#section=justhd

However it could also have something do with the way you encoded it.

I'd recommend using H.264 over VP6 but your mileage may vary, certainly the Exposureroom recommends it.

p.s. Thanks for your advice earlier but don't preach to me ever again.

Rude, but right.

There are many beautiful things about Christianity but your proselytism is both ugly and rude.

IMHO.

Happy New Year.
