HD looks like crap on youtube - what am I doing wrong?
on Dec 4, 2008 at 11:42:45 pm

hey folks,

I'm trying to send an HD video from final cut to youtube and although it looks beautiful when exported, when it's published on youtube it looks like crap.

I sent it on 3 ways: mp4 with bitrate 1800, mp4 with bitrate 5000 and .mov h.264 with medium quality. Their frame size is 640x360 on all cases. But like I said, it loses a lot of quality on youtube. What's stranger is, when I made these same compressions on an SD video, it looked great! Can anybody please send me a light? Thanks!

This is a handy thing to read for youtube related video, we've uploaded some music vids in the past which were shot in HD and compressed to H.264 using the settings in the guide

YouTube has changed. YouTube now displays 16:9 at 960 pixels across.
If you add
&fmt=22
YouTube will display 720p30.
H264 2 pass or multipass at 5000kbps 1280x720p should look good on YouTube. Do remember that the quality of your source has a major impact. 35mm film or HDCAM will often look better than HDV.

Example

It even looks decent if you use full screen mode although unfortunately it's scaling the video to 1920x1080 on my monitor. I'd like to turn scaling off so I can see it at its native 720p.

BTW DO NOT play the embedded video here. Embeds still look HORRID. Go to YouTube and play the above video. REPEAT do NOT play the file embedded here!

I had nothing to do with this video but it is a good example of how good YouTube can look now.

I'm working on exactly the same issue today.
Right now I'm compressing as Craig suggests. You can view
it later today- I'll provide the link.

It is 4 min of 1080P/24fps (EX1)422 color space. I'm compressing at 720P at 5000K DR. One question: Craig writes

"If you add &fmt=22"

Where exactly should this be added? At what point to I access this command string on the youtube interface? I'm pretty unfamiliar with the tricks there.

I've loaded clips at youtube before but never tried to do it right.
Heck, a year ago the was no right!

add that "fmt=22" right after your link to force youtube to display in original high quality

check out my test HD clip

the text is so crispy that it blows my mind to see this on youtube.

What's funny is that the clips are so short and that "fmt=22" is a hack, nothing more.

thank you so much guy.
I'll try your tips and see if it gets better.
it's a shame my client wants so bad the video to be on youtube. On vimeo.com it looks so much better... :(
