boosting quality keeping size
on Nov 26, 2008 at 5:05:44 am

Hi All,

We run a small studio and multimeida suit. At the moment our standard delivery platform for video content is:

.wmv
250kbps video bitrate
15 fps
480 x 270 resolution.

As you may imagine this produces a very low picture quality. Out problem is we need messages to stream quick enough to watch in countries like India and Fiji. We are also limited to Windows Media Player and Flash 7. Do you have any recommendations to get better quality video whilst limiting the bandwidth to our current standards? Perhaps a flash 7 equivilent?

I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Cheers, Matt Krumins

If you are limited by output format and datarate the only way you can usefully improve the quality is to use higher quality source. Flash 7 is Flash 7 - there is no alternative.

That said. we might be able to tweak your quality level if you provide us details of what encoders you use, what source you use and what settings you currently use.

We are using Sorenson Squeeze. Is flash 7 better than .wmv? we CAN use flash 7, but dont...

Ok, so you didn't provide any details....so I can't really help, but no, WMV is far higher quality than Sorenson Spark (Flash 7)

Well, what source you use would be a good start! (please don't just say DV or HDV!)

Generally speaking, we capture footage as HDV or DV, once edited and treated in AE it is exported as a .mov using the Animation codec.

We are using Premier CS3 for capture, however due to file size we if we are dealing with miniDV tapes we usually capture clips with DV compression...

Ok, you have way to many issues to deal with in a forum like this. Obviously one of them is that you have both DV and HDV.

But, the bottom line is that 250Kb/s is too little for a frame size of 480x270. Either increase your datarate or reduce your frame size!

At 250Kb/s I'd suggest a 16:9 frame size of no more than 384x216.
