Why are my FLV's so big?
on Oct 11, 2008 at 12:37:16 am

I'm editing HDV 1080 footage and converting to flv for the web.
I feel like my files are too messy for how big they are.

For example I've got a 8 min. flv file
Video: On2VP6 155kb/s
420 x 236 (that is the size of the flash player the web guy built)
Audio: 64kb/s mono (the audio seems to sound fine)
File size: 22MB

The file can be seen here: http://www.minnesotashubert.org/hiphop/36.html -it's the 3rd video on the page called "Final Battle"

Workflow:
Edit in HDV 1080 FCP sequence
Export Uncompressed 10bit 1080 file (which looks fantastic by the way)
Encode to above FLV settings with Adobe Flash Media Converter.

Am I missing something here or do I have unrealistic expectations?Does anyone else think that an 8 min 22MB FLV file should look that messy?

Two things are wrong there:

1. Letting your web guy dictate the size of your video frame, it should be the other way around and only choose frames sizes from these tables:

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/apps/flv_bitrate_calculator/video_sizes.h...

2. Your data rate is WAY too low and there is no way that the COdec could encode it at that bit rate. you should be looking at a minimum of 300kb/s for that video

Thanks the tips, I bookmarked those tables and I'll definitely be using and sharing them. Unfortunately I don't think there is really any wiggle room for frame size, especially now. I did replace the video with one that is 450kb/s and the audio was 48kb/s mono and I think it's much better, but the file is 50MB. Is it supposed to be that big? Are there other ways to cut down the file size? The flash media encoder doesn't really have much for options and parameters.

The file size is in direct relation to the actual data rate of the file multiplied by it's length. Bear in mind that although you specified a data rate of 450k/s, it won't remain at exactly that throughout the clip.

Well that certainly makes sense, I guess I just had unrealistic expectations then.
Is there a FLV encoder that works better than the one that comes with Flash?

Yes.

If you have the money get Episode with the Flash add on, it's the best out there.
Next best is compressor
If you want it for free get FFMPEGx.

All I think are better than the Adobe solution

hmmm... my last work used Episode, I didn't realize it cost that much though, I tried the FFMPEGx but couldn't get it to work, maybe I'll have to browse the forums there a bit.

Thanks for the help.
