is it true I need Windows for this compression? .avi to QT

A client was thrilled to give me a .avi file for me to edit into an FCP timeline of his acting reel.

I have Quicktime 7, and one of the export options is to H.264, but every time I drop in my .avi file (which looks like it's in a quicktime wrapper), it spends plenty of time transcoding and then tells me the resulting qt file isn't a movie (and it won't open it).

is it true that to transcode it to an Apple friendly qt, I need to use a Windows computer?

anyone done this already that could walk me through with a Compressor or Quicktime workflow?

Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

AVI is a wrapper than can contain any number of codecs inside. Since AVI is a wrapper it certainly wouldn't be wrapped in Quicktime.

I've had no problem editing DV .AVI in Final Cut Pro although it will pop up a warning message.

You really need to find out what's inside the AVI wrapper.
Can you play/see the video in Quicktime?
Can you use Window/Show Movie Inspector to see what codec it reports?

There are many codecs inside of AVI that require 3rd Party plugins and there are a few which may not have a Quicktime plugin available for it. Some are only available for Windows.

Answer the above questions and maybe I can help you get to the next step.

Yeah, I'd say 90% chance that's it's DV codec and will work in Final Cut Pro as-is.

If you have access to Windows, you can run the free GSpot Information Appliance to find out what codec it's using otherwise.
