HELP! QT H264; mpeg4 & After FX export crossplatform issues
on Apr 17, 2008 at 10:39:33 pm

Hi

I've been away from digital video for a while & I'm finding myself a little rusty!

I've got a 4 minute promo video we're wanting to put on 512 mb usb sticks & give out to clients. Not knowing wether they're win or mac we need a universal solution.

I'm created the piece 720x576 in After fx 7 (pro) & also have access to Vegas 7 & figured that either a QT H264 or an mpeg4 would be the solution but -

>< I cant output a small size .mov using H264 in AFX - each file is the same size regardless of the quality setting chosen (around 550mb (think this is an afx h264 issue)).

>< The mainconcept mpeg4 I created in vegas (from the uncompressed aVI) are the right size (all under 100mb) but dont play on every windows machine tested. Is there an mpeg4 codec which is more widespread?

Is there indeed any true universal video format that plays on the 'majority' of macs/pcs? If its either of the above formats, what settings should I be using? Am I simply missing a trick?

or Should I use wmv & qt (sorenson) maybe & cover both platforms?

I dont have access to squeeze or procoder & had hoped to be able to use AFX

Any advice would be v v useful & much apperciated

Cheers

Either WMV or H.264 would suit. However you really need to get hold of a transcoder like Squeeze or Procoder or similar. AFX is not going to do a good job for you.

If you use WMV, you can now embed in Silverlight cross-platform. If you need to support downloads, it works out of the box on Windows, and with Flip4Mac on Mac.

Unfortunately, the only really universally supported media format is MPEG-1...

Many thanks all

I ended up with a .wmv AND .mov (Sorensen) made using Vegas.
A definite heads up for me to invest in cleaner or squeeze

Much appreciated
