currently I use autodesk cleaner xl to compress my videos for youtube.
They are short segments so size is not an issuse but I have seen better quaility...
any sugustions

I have used Cleaner XL 1.5 for video encoding for many years now but Sorenson Squeeze is faster and better for Flash Video and some other formats.

Sadly, cleaner xl is terribly out of date and rather slow.

IMO, Procoder from Grass Valley is one of the best alternatives out there. Very fast with high quality output. It's almost as easy to use as Squeeze but gives access to advanced features and settings, not available in Squeeze, should you want to get your hands 'dirty'.

However if all you'll ever compress for is youtube then you might just want to try Riva and Flix Pro
