Best video format for large database
on Nov 28, 2007 at 1:18:35 pm

Hi,

My company has a large tape database that needs to be digitized.
Its about 4000 hour, of DigiBeta(3000) BetaSP(4000) and DVCAM(400).

I'm searching for the best video codec where compression quality and data rate are both accaptable. And that the codec is widly supported.

The SAN system where it will be stored on will be a Xraid with fiber connections to the mac's (4 to 6). Also the storage needs to be expandable for future growth. We will start with a smaller size storage, and grow in time. My start size will be 15 > 20TB

I heard about the IMX50 or the new prores422 from apple, also the plain old DV is an option. But i'm totally not sure wich one is the best.

Does somebody have an awnser for me?

Luuk

There is no one answer, there is no 'which one is best' however in my opinion, I'd go with something like IMX(50) rather than Apple-specific formats like ProRes. Avoid DV25.
