Software to batch rip DVD to WMV with custom settings?
on Aug 2, 2007 at 1:09:12 am

I have scoured the internet for the past 2 hours trying to find software that does exactly what I need and have not had any luck. We have been hired to take 1,500 DVDs and convert the main tracks into WMVs of different sizes. Since there are so many, we need a program that lets you do batch jobs - not only with multiple DVDs (different drives), - but also with multiple output settings for each title in a batch output module to reduce the babysitting factor. Does anyone have any idea what software allows this? !!Ripping, then batching is not an option!! (direct quote from my boss) Mpeg streamclip does not support wmv output. I have installed approx. 20 different trial softwares and none do this. Also, it seems that most of the software I have tried either breaks up the different chapters into independent clips or only rip the first chapter, ignoring the rest. Can anyone reccomend a software package that does what I need it to do?

There isn't any one thing that'll do exactly what you want. You'll need to either employ a couple of different applications and do a fair amount of manual work or get a developer to write a custom script or app that will be able to control a 3rd party tool.

There are many possible routes to a solution, it depends on the kit you have available to you and / or what sort of budget you have to buy in new stuff and possibly get a script or dev guy to figure the rest out for you.

If you can get a good AVISynth reading workflow going, WMCmd.vbs natively supports .avs inputs now. Then you can command-line script everything.

If your source discs are non CSS'ed, Rhozet Carbon is capable of excellent high volume encoding straight from .VOB on a disc to WMV.

Thank you and that is great information. However, I must admit that I am a motion graphics artist and do not have much experience with command-line scripting. I can get myself around the registry editor steps for the codec optimization etc; I just fall short in understanding of how to get these to work together via command line. Are there any links that cover the cammand-line / scripting part of this?
