FCP Best Compression
on Jul 21, 2007 at 8:29:24 am

I am editing a 20 minute segment for dvd. I also want to save the segment as a non-ntsc formatted movie as a back-up on a data dvd..

I know how to export into Apple Compressor for dvd set up, (NTSC), but what if I just wanted to save the Quick Time Movie for my archives? What would be the best codec? Saving uncompressed would give me too large of a file to back up on a data dvd.

Also, what software do you recommend? Flip4Mac? Squeeze?, Sheer Video HD Pro?
I am working on a Mac G-5.

Does Flip4Mac export flv fiiles?

I'd use PhotoJPEG for archive.

For encoding I'd recommend Episode from Telestream (the Flip4mac guys)

Why don't you want to back up in NTSC format? If you're already using a compressed codec like DV, you can just Save As QuickTime with the same settings.

Unfortunately, QuickTime doesn't include any efficient interlaced codecs. Unless your project is progressive, you'll have to use something like Motion JPEG or DV for the backup.
