50p vs. 25p WMV - more hardware?
on May 1, 2007 at 9:54:43 am

Hello,

Does playing back 50p WMV requires more hardware?

I have an HDV footage, captured at 50p. Encoding it to a 50p WMV, and playing it back is fine on my computer (I got Core2 DUAL), but for some reason the same video was choppy on a friends (mid-level AMD). Does anybody have actual proof that playing back 50p on a computer requires more hardware?

Thanks
David

50p is obviously twice the frame rate of 25p. Assuming all things are equal 50p is also twice the data rate of 25p.

Therefore one can assume that 50p requires twice the processing power and raw data transfer as 25p would.

That's not exactly how it is in the real world but its close enough as an illustration.

To improve the performance of his 'mid-level AMD' may just require more memory and/or faster hard drives, but it depends what you mean by 'mid-level AMD'

What frame size and data rate are you targeting? The fps don't matter that much themselves - it's about fps * height * width.

Hi Ben,

1280x720, and all bitrates, from 56k to 3Mbit.

Please explain what you mean... :)

Thanks
David

1280x720x50 is a lot of pixels per second - a mid-range machine could have troubles.

Things that can improve performance:

Use WMP11, which has a faster decoder
Use Vista, which is faster yet
Turn on DXVA for GPU-accelerated decode if there's a compatible GPU installed.
