Do GOP settings affect a DVDs abaility to playback in standard players

Do GOP settings affect a DVDs abaility to playback in standard players. I know it affects the quality. I'm trying my best to make a 2 hour video shot with some poor quality cameras, look as good as possible and also have no playback issues on old players. It seems when I boost the average bitrate or reduce the gop, it helps the fuzzy scenes become less blocky.
Whatever I do, I'm afraid of effecting playback on old DVD players.

I'me hoping to use 2pass
avg 6.0
max 7.2
on Verbatum DL media
with ac3 audio

via FCP/compressor/DVD Studio

Should I be afraid to go above 6.0. I heard I should stick to 5.5 average bitrate for best compatibility. Is that true?

Thanks for any help
Jim

I like to stick to 6.5 Mbps peak for DVD-R.

6.3 Mbps peak for video, 192 Kbps AC-3 audio. As for average, that depends on how much content you have. If it's south of 90 minutes, just CBR will work.

Don't mess with the GOP settings unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing.
I use 2-Pass VBR when I have the time and/or when it's challenging and highly varied content.

It's a London thing.

Thanks for your replies. When I was young, I opened up and turned a screw to adjust the speed of my fathers apple II hard drive so my video game disk would load. After that, my game played.., but my father could not open up any of his spreadsheets. I do still love to screw around though.

I suppose the answer lies within the engineering realm. If I come across an answer, I'll let you know.
