Uncompressed QT file won't play on PC?
on Dec 1, 2006 at 1:00:17 am

I've been asked to create a 10 bit uncompresssed QuickTime file which will be submitted for broadcast.
No big deal (I thought) as this is clearly an option in QT PRO.
I made the file with no problems and it worked fine on a Mac.
As part onf my routine testing, I also check my encodes on a PC. Guess what? No Video, just black. Audio seems fine. I would suspect a missing codec, but with an uncompressed file, I thought that there was not any codecs, just QuickTime.
Should this file play on a PC?

BTW, Both Mac and PC are using QT 7
I've also tried making the file in compressor and get the same results.
I have Squeeze 4.3, but did not try it as uncompressed did not appear to be an option.

Any help is appreciated in advance.

Chris

Yeah, just download the BlackMagic or AJA codecs for Windows, install them, and you should then be able to play back the 10bit QTs.

Hi Charles,
What do you mean by yeah?
Yeah, it should not work? Yeah, your not suprised at my results?

I was under the impression that an uncompressed file would not need a codec to play as it is not compressed. Should'nt QuickTime just be able play this file on it's own (Mac or PC)?

Thanks for the help
Chris

Yes, as in it should play back on a PC. 8bit uncompressed files generally aren't a problem, but 10bit can be, and I imagine you used the Apple 10bit Uncompressed codec when exporting, which only gets installed with FCP. So on a PC, you need to download and install a compatible codec, like BlackMagic.

Hi Charles,

Thank you. You gave great advice.
I downloaded BlackMagic's codec and it tested fine on the PC.
I'll include the codec for my client just in case.

Best regards,
Chris
