non downloadable quicktime/WM file
on Nov 21, 2006 at 6:31:12 am

Hi guys,
Is there a way to encode a QT or WM file and host it on a website which WILL NOT allow someone to download and save it. ie. I want them to be able to 1) either play via streaming or preferably 2) download it for playback but not be able to save it easily.

Any ideas?
Regards,
Steve

You said the magic word yourself, streaming. Only problem is you need to stream it
on a streaming server rather than an html server.

For QT, you can disable saving or editing changes. Cleaner has an easy enable button for this while encoding, but for other apps you can use a script available from Apple. Go to http://www.apple.com/applescript/quicktime/ Download the script collection and then look for a script called "Save As Un-Editable". Read the notes to understand how it works and what it does to your original file. You should note though, as with anything on the internet, there really isn't anything that is truly un-savable and there is a relatively easy workaround for those who know.
