troubles compressing 4 hour video for single layer DVD
on Sep 19, 2006 at 5:23:13 pm

I am authoring a DVD that needs to contain 4 hrs of DV footage shot last week.

After finding out that Compressor doesn't have a mpeg2 setting that will compress it small enough to fit on a single layer disk. I tried with Quicktime and on it's lowest setting it has it coming in at 4.5. So I tried it twice and quicktime has frozen up afer 7min of compression.

Can anyone help me figure out my options. I need to get this DVD in the mail today.

thanks!

I would suggest buying a software encoder that will allow you to encode to 1/2 D1 resolution MPEG-2 (352x480). This will allow you to encode to a much lower bit rate while still retaining good quality and DVD SP will be compatible with it. Such softwares that I recommend on the mac are BitVice, MainConcept, Episode, and MEGAPeg Pro. Alternatively, you can set your DVD up for a DL disc, which should afford you plenty of room to encode 4 hours to one DVD at full resolution.
