What are the best choices for an MPEG2 compressor to purchase
on Mar 30, 2006 at 12:18:34 am

Greetings,
I'm wondering what the general opinion is of what the best options are for
buying a MPEG2 compressor for DVD production.
I edit on FCP5, and author in DVD Studio Pro.
I also use a PC, so i'm not opposed to a PC solution.
Thanks much!

Bitvice, Main Concept on the Mac.

CinemaCraft on the PC.

Rick, do you use MainConcept on Mac for compressing uncompressed Quicktimes to mpeg-2? Do you have any issues with encoded files being darker than the originals (mainly in the gamma range)?

Haven't used CinemaCraft, but for PCs Canopus Procoder has been called the best by
people I respect. I think it's much better than the Mac solutions I use (BitVice and Compressor- although
BitVice over Compressor).

Cinemacraft is the most flexible if you have a lot of time to tweak.

ProCoder offers the best quality for a simple 2-pass encode. However, it's a little tricky to get chapter marks in the right place with the release version.
