How to encode to MPEG-4 V2?
on Sep 26, 2005 at 7:46:01 pm

I need to compress a video such that it will run on
a non-updated Win98 system. As well as I can tell,
Win98 shipped with Windows Media Player 6.1

I thought I could use a WMV wrapper and encode the video
as MPEG-4 V3, but I tested it and Windows asks if I want
to download a newer player. That's not an acceptable option
for this project.

So, would MPEG-4 V2 be a better choice? But neither my Mac
Cleaner V6 or my XP Squeeze v4 gives me this option. (Windows
Media Encoder just crashes whenever I use it.)

How would you encode a video that needed to play on a virgin
Win98 system? Remember, the user cannot be required to download

How about MPEG-1?

The MS MPEG-4v2 codec was dropped some SDK releases ago. I think it was last included around 6.x. The last tool I remembered having that supported it was Media Cleaner 4!

Yep. Square pixel MPEG-1 would be a fine choice for file-based playback on that system.
