"Cannot Parse File" Error, opening .kmz/.dae file into PS CS5
on Feb 15, 2011 at 10:55:40 pm

I am having an issue trying to open a 3D file in Photoshop. Everyone claims it is so easy, and I assume it is, except I can't open the file.

Above link is the file error I get. I tried importing as a 3D layer, and get this:

Apparently I don't have enough Video Ram??? Even though I can build 3D files in Sketchup, with several other programs running.
I have 12GB of DDR3 memory, 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor, ATI Radeon HD 4870 (512MB) is my video card.
Here's a screen cap of the info:

Is this seriously why it can't "parse" the file? Not a badass enough video card? Even though I have OpenGL enabled and can process nearly anything in AfterEffects? I'd really like some clarity on this issue, to see if I'm doing anything wrong on my end.
Any help would be fantastic, thanks.

Usually that "cannot parse the file" error is due to an incompatible format, not a lack of system resources. I would check if that 3D file format is supported in your version of Photoshop. And you may also have better luck in the Photoshop forum.

.KMZ / .DAE are compatible 3D formats for Photoshop CS5 Extended, confirmed.
Any other ideas?

NEVERMIND. It's because Photoshop can't parse the file if there are components or grouped objects in the file itself. Which there were. I had a few objects in Sketchup grouped (whether it be grouping, or creating components), and when I right-clicked them and ungrouped or "exploded" and then exported as a .kmz file, Photoshop read it correctly. Problem solved.

Good to know. Thanks for posting the solution. It will probably save someone else a lot of headaches down the road.
