Which Comp Preset to use to output to Avid DNxHD codec
on Jan 19, 2011 at 7:22:35 pm

I'm the graphic artist for that TV show "The Office" and I'm doing some motion graphics. They cut it on Avid using the DNxHD codec. First off, how do I set up my files in Illustrator and Photoshop? Is it square pixels? Is it 1920 X 1080 pixels? And then when I get into After Effects CS5 what Composition setting do I use that will conform with this codec? Is it DVCPRO HD? Thanks a bunch!! - Michael

Thanks so much for all the great help!

Michael

Wow!

I'm floored that a big-time production company would say, "go make us some graphics," without giving you some delivery specifications.

Well, a bureaucracy's a bureaucracy, I guess. It still stinks.

I'd start by buttonholing one of those Avid cutters and asking questions like:
  • What H & V resolution do you need?
  • What codec do you need?
  • What's the specific frame rate you need? 29.97? 59.94i? 59.94p? 23.976?
  • Do I need to keep the important things in 4x3 title safe?
  • If I deliver animations with an alpha channel, what's the codec, and is it straight or premultiplied?

Once you know that, we can start talkin' specifics. But I should tell you that starting at 1920x1080 is a very good starting point indeed. I personally don't know if the DNxHD codec should be an AVI or a Quicktime Movie, because I cut on Final Cut Pro and not Avid.

Thanks so much for your speedy reply!

The specifics on the codec are 1080p / 23.976 175 10-bit
Actually they didn't say "go make us some graphics" I just made them any way I could and they got approved. Now I have to give it to them so they can use it. Yikes!
My main question is: what preset to use in AE CS5? Is it a DVCPRO preset? If so which one? I loaded their codec fine and can see it when I render under "Format options".
BTW, what is HV resolution? (dumb Q I know!)

I'm kinda green to motion graphics. Mainly it's the composition setting Q.

Thanks so much for all the great help!

[Michael Bayouth] "BTW, what is HV resolution? (dumb Q I know!)"

H = horizontal
V = vertical

[Michael Bayouth] "Mainly it's the composition setting Q."

Okay, here's what you do: make a new comp, 1920x1080, square pixels, and make the frame rate 23.976 frames/sec. You're good to go.

If you do any Photoshop or illustrator work, keep things as square pixels, and life will be good.

Don't forget that in AE, you can move things around on the screen, so you're not stuck at 1920x1080; that's particularly significant for Photoshop work, not so much for Illustrator.

Let's say it's fancy closing credits, where it looks like the camera's booming up the side of a file cabinet, then stops, then the drawer opens and some associate producer's name & title pops out and pops back in, then the drawer closes, and the cycle repeats for the drawer above. Let's further say you want to do this in Photoshop. You'll need to make it MUCH larger than 1920x1080.

I hope you have your delivery codecs all doped out, too.

i don't know if there is actually a preset for this, but what you want is:

comp size: 1920x1080
par: square
frame rate: 23.976

when you render you'll choose quicktime, click the options and choose the dnxhd as the codec/compression and then choose 1080p/23.976 175 10-bit for the resolution.

dnxhd is full raster (or square pixel), there is no horizontal scaling of the image like hdv, dvcprohd, etc... so you'll want square pixel for your comp setting.

as far as which preset or comp settings to use, it depends on the the frame size and frame rate that they produce the show in... i assume that since the office is on nbc, that it is shot in 1080. if that's true then the comp size would be 1920x1080.

what i don't know is what frame rate.... it could be 1080i, which would be 29.97fps, and rendered with fields (upper 1st). or they could be shooting in 1080p, which would most likely be 23.976fps (though you can shoot in 29.97 progressive), either way you would render progressive.

so you really should ask.

Thanks Kevin!

So basically I can leave the comp setting in CS5 set to "Custom" and just make sure it's 1920 X 1080?

Thanks again!

i replied to your response to dave, but you's also want to set the frame rate to 23.976 (based on your response to dave...)

And make sure you render in 16-bit (or 32) since you're delivering in 10-bit.
