I have been tasked with bringing a vector based photoshop storyboard to life in AE.

The story follows a light path/ribbon element that flies it way into various scenes.
I want to put vector layers in 3d, give a kind of 'pop-up book' look.
And now the tricky bit. I need my arrow light path to fly through the various scenes in z depth leaving a trail behind it, with the camera constantly following it from a short distance behind.
I'm thinking Trapcode Particular which I have, but having tried something like this before, controlling emitter pos of 3d path can be extremely tricky - can anyone shed some light on a good approach to this, or steer me towards any useful tutorials that might help?
