Demystifying continuous Raster/Collapse Transformation

One of the most frustrating and mind boggling parts of AE for me is the Continuous Raster/Collapse Transformation button. It never seems to work as I expect it to. I am hoping that someboy here can help demystifying the thing once and for all.

When, where and how do you use the Continuous raster switch to get pristine vector art? For example, if you bring art in as a comp, then use that art in another comp? Why is it needed? Would you always want continuous rastering of art?

When, where and how do you use the collapse transformation switch? What is it for?

Thanks,
