Turbulent noise in pre-comp looks blurred in main comp
on Jul 4, 2020 at 7:12:45 am

Hi everyone,

I've got a pre-composition with a turbulent noise effect (and three adjustment layers) inside. When I view the noise in this pre-comp, it looks fine, but when I look in the main composition, it looks blurred. Why is this happening and how could I fix this? I can't apply "collapse transformations / continuously rasterize", as far as I understand.

Sincerely,
Tsovinar

Is it scaled in any way in the Main comp?
3D camera?

Hi Eric. The spheres are not scaled. I've got a 3D camera, and have tried to work with its position rather than the zooming option as much as I could. Nevertheless, when I turn off the camera, I cannot detect any difference in the extent of blurriness on the sphere's turbulent surface.

Oh, wait so you have generated spheres in a precomp and within that you have all the effects applied?
Is this precomp now a 3D layer in the Main with camera?
Not sure but maybe that recipe dont work with 3D?
Can you post an example or simple step by step of your file setup?

The main composition contains i.a. the camera and the pre-composition. The sphere effect is applied to the pre-composition inside this main composition. Inside the pre-composition I have a turbulent noise effect layer and three adjustment layers. So:

In the main composition:
1. camera;
2. pre-composition, and right here on this layer applied effects, i.a. cc sphere effect;
....

Inside the above-mentioned pre-composition:
1. adjustment layer with offset effect;
2. adjustment layer with mirror effect;
3. adjustment layer with polar coordinates effect;
4. solid with turbulent noise effect.

Within the main composition, the pre-comp is marked as 3D.

What do you think?

What’s the size of your precomp?

A CC sphere’s texture should have a 2x1 width to height ratio
Even then, the texture gets quite stretch in the front.

How blurry are de talking ? A 1-2 pixels loss of sharpness, or really low-res ?
Is only the texture blurry, or also the perimeter of the sphere ?

Lastly: video copilot’s Free VC Orb plug-in is a bit sharper and much much more versatile than CC Sphere..

Hi Filip,

Both the main comp and the pre-comp are 1920 x 1080.
You mean I should try going, say, 1920 x 960 for the pre-comp?
I just tried it but found no difference in quality.
Well, I think it's quite low-res, and the perimeter looks pixelated as well.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had tried to use the VC Orb effect but unfortunately I couldn't achieve some very specific ends with it, so I had to revert to CC Sphere in the end.

If the sides of the sphere are pixelated as well, that suggests you are scaling up the layer in some way.
You mentioned 3D, so maybe you have this set up on a 3D layer, always pointing towards the camera ? Zooming or moving in Z-space would then inevitably lower the resolution.
Again VC ORb, can be integrated more easy inside a 3D composition, keeping the outlines crisper.

Really? Aww... that's too bad. Yes, you are right, that is the case. I have them auto-oriented towards the camera.
Thanks a lot for your help, Filip!

It's not so much the auto-orient, as the actual movement in 3D-space, doesn't matter if it's zooming or 3D space.

One thing you don't want to do is set your CC-sphere radius to be small. It's OK to make the radius large, and then scale down the layer. The opposite will lose you resolution.

for example:
a CC sphere with radius 50px and layer scale at [100,100,100] will look equally large as one with radius 500px at scale [10,10,10], but the latter has 10x the resolution.

This might solve your problem. I'd make the radius at least 540px for HD, depending on how close you want to get to the layer.
in CC-sphere this does alter the perspective look of the ball though.

Filip, awesome, this seems to be working, I can't thank you enough!
