So I'm not a total beginner to AE, but I have something I just can't figure out.
I have some swirling lines on a spline path I want to loop in front of and behind a character I have in my scene. I have an alpha for the character to set it apart from the background if that helps. I've attached pictures to show you what I mean.
But what would I do to get these behind and in front of my character at the same time? Does it involve some sort of track matte? Making the layers 3D wouldn't work, because I need it parts of the swirls to be in front of and behind my character at the same time.
Thank you in advance.

Since your swirls are a 2D effect, you can't. You need to generate them with something that has z-depth information included, such as Particular.

Check out this short tutorial from workbench about doing this. https://lesterbanks.com/2018/05/link-multiple-paths-expression/

You can link multiple splines together with the expression in there and animate it so it does look like the lines are going infront and behind of a object.

Hey Max.
Here's how I edit. (I think there is another way as well)
Hit reply to your own post, then when the text entry area comes up, instead of tying, scroll up and just below the last item in the thread list (your last post) will be an edit button. That will let you edit your last post. Correct and then hit submit.
Sadly, far too many posts are completed before coffee is completed.
