After Effects cropping videos within videos
on Mar 27, 2019 at 1:54:50 pm

Here's an odd question: I have 12 videos which I would like to layer on top of each other, as essentially concentric rectangles, something like this:

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/11056918/printing-nested-squares-using-...

It's taking forever to render (each video is 1920x1080, pre-comp, then scaled within the main comp and layered on top of each other). Is there a way to somehow crop out the central part of each video, that's being masked/covered by the next video, to reduce render time?

Many thanks!

Two things:

Rendering 12 layers of video should not take long (presuming you have a fast read on those files)

Masking out those parts could potentially increase render times, since it has to process the file then layer out (in the render stack pipeline) the cropped file.

if you take out all the pictures does it still take a long time to render...maybe converting the pictures to a smaller format would help?

I think you could turn each layer on as a track matte if they're just all stacked on top of each other. How long do you mean it's taking? I wouldn't think it would take all that long.
