How do I get a solid to stick to the surface I've tracked in mocha?
on Jan 2, 2019 at 1:43:31 pm

Hi!

I'm fairly new to AE and mocha and hit a speed bump.
I've tracked a surface in mocha and I'm trying to apply a solid layer to move just like the surface, see video on the link:

I then made a solid right over my hand, but when I apply the tracking data it gets offset (and the height scales strangely).
When I try to move it to be over the hand it gets clipped, see images:

Image 1: shape layer is offset:

Image 2: layer gets clipped:

The tracked plane and shape layer are acting the way I want them to, just not in the right place. I've tried moving the entire solid layer as well as editing the point of origin but to no avail. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks!

Im no mocha expert but messing with the surface align tool might help. Take a look at this tut from lester Banks and maybe that will illuminate the issue.

Are you sure you are not mixing up your animated solid with your tracked solid...it happens...its tracking data you are copying right...not shape data...just checking all the bells and whistles..

Hi!

I'm fairly new to mocha so just tried to follow some tutorials, it's not impossible I've messed up somewhere along the way... ☺

How do I tell the animated solid from the tracked solid?

My workflow looks a bit like this:

1. Be in after effects > open the video of the hand in mocha, draw a surface plane to track.
2. Let it chew through all the keyframes, confirm the surface plan is tracked correctly.
3. Save and close mocha > jump back to after effects.
4. Create the track data.
5. Draw a solid shape, set it as a target for the track data.

And as soon as I click "apply" for the track data the solid gets offset or jumps out of view and I'm at issue mentioned in the original post. :-(

You do not need to draw a surface plane in Mocha. just pick a few pixels and start tracking...apply motion data to a (lets say a yellow solid) in after effects via copy and paste...I believe what was happeninnng is that you are trying to do it all in mocha. YOu get the data from mocha and the geometry in after effects....I think what was going on is you were animatiing the mask data on top of the motion data so that your masks ...you know what im pretty new to mocha too but I had help
