My videos become pixelated after exporting them.
on Dec 10, 2018 at 5:36:47 pm

When I use after effects to add an effect such as a gun shot effect or something like that, it looks good in the video while working in after effects.

But then when I export it, and play it back to see how it exported, the video starts off fine, but then pixelates when the gun shot happens. Not just around the gunshot, but the whole picture does. Then when the gun shot is over, it goes back to high quality resolution.

It's as if AE has trouble processing the effect in that portion of the video during exporting. Has anyone had this problem?

Your description leads me to believe that you exported a VERY highly-compressed video file. I think you're seeing compression artifacts.

But this never happened before when using AE, and only started recently, and the video files are same as before. So is their anything I did differently before that made it work then?

I don't those files are the same. The most obvious thing to check are your Output Module settings in AE; chances are pretty darn good they've changed.

Next would be the compression preset settings in Adobe Media Encoder if you happen to use it.

Okay thanks. What should the settings be in both the output and the compressions settings be to retain the highest quality?

That depends on what you're required to deliver.
How will your AE work be used? What will be the next piece of software to use it? What will the next user in line do with it? Does the next user need a special media container & Codec?
These are all crucial considerations.

Well I want to export it out of after effects to be used in Premiere pro afterwards and placed in with the rest of the editing. I want the quality to just as high as it was originally shot, if possible.

We are aiming for film festivals and we shot at with a1080p camera at an H264 codec. In after effects, the effects look good but after exporting, it looks so much more pixelated compared what it was before. So I want to look just as high resolution going in, as it does going out, if possible.

I was able to do it before and I don't see any settings that have changed.

There's a free app called Mediainfo:
https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
It can tell you the bit rate of a media file, plus a lot more. I'd compare the bit rates between a good, old clip and a bad, new one. I bet you learn a lot -- the lower the bit rate, the worse-looking the video.

Okay thanks, but what I still don't understand is, is that why does the video look so good while in AE, compared to when it comes out? I export it as an uncompressed AVI file so shouldn't uncompressed AVI look good?

Can you post some screenshots that show your entire Ae UI and that show the problem you're seeing?

When yous say UI do you mean the screen that shows my export settings?

That'd be helpful. I'd also like to see your project settings, a screenshot that shows the entire UI in Ae (where presumably everything looks right), and a screenshot that shows what the problematic output looks like.

Okay I tried taking screenshots, but I've never done this before and I read instructions on how to do it, but when I do, nothing happens. I will keep trying.
