Rolling/Running over a Hill

I am trying to create an effect and I haven't quite figured it out.

Example: 1:45 mark of this video:

I believe the cc sphere and rotation timeline is used, however, I don't understand how the trees are rolling also? They look like simple 2D trees but the rolling down the hill looks very convincing.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

they are 2d trees on a rolling ball...not that hard to do...should be easier now with the ORB plugin from video co pilot

I had not known about that plug in. I will definitely look into it. Thank you!

actually i dont think the orb can do this....watch the ball carefully and you will see its 2d trees...

[Richard Garabedain] "actually i dont think the orb can do this....watch the ball carefully and you will see its 2d trees..."

Do you have any ideas on how it might be done?

I followed this tutorial, but the trees just flipped over and over...

Have you tried going through the example file they linked to in that thread? In theory it should be pretty straightforward. Just parenting 3d layers to a 3d null at the center of the "sphere" and rotate the null.

I tried, however, the trees only spun in place. The way you said it though makes more sense than what I did. I had the sphere rotating, and tried to rotate the null and trees separately, but I think both the sphere and the trees need to match the rotation to the null. I don't think I tried that. I will give it a shot tonight, when I am able to focus on that project. Thank you again.
