Why can I no longer export with h.264?
on Oct 19, 2018 at 4:09:50 pm

I recently updated my After Effects version and now h.264 isn't showing as a video codec under Quicktime. I'm still able to export with h.264 in Premiere. Why isn't it showing in After Effects?

😥

Adobe has removed a bunch of the legacy codecs because Apple neglected the development of Quicktime. You can still add the comp to the Adobe Media Encoder queue and export with the H264 format in an mp4 container.

Odd they started doing this on the Mac side years ago.
Well for me anyway, since I had so many varying presets from AE.
I've since updated it all in AME.

h.264 is considered 'legacy'? But it compresses so well! Are there other similar codecs? h.264 was always my go-to!

[Martin Kruul] "Are there other similar codecs?"

Yes? The Mainconcept H264 that can be found in the latest version as H264 under the format selection drop drown menu.

[Martin Kruul] "h.264 is considered 'legacy'?"

Quicktime H264 was always really bad and limited and as Apple dropped developing Quicktime there's no use to keep using it becaaauuuussseee... There's the Mainconcept H264 which is better, not limited like the Quicktime one and is still being developed.

As others have said, H.264 isn't legacy. H.264 inside an MOV is considered legacy. It was never really supported by Apple in the first place and it had some...interesting bugs.

And to echo other posters, DO NOT use QT h264, use the h264 presets.
