How do you make text letter counters transparent in After Effects?
on Oct 2, 2018 at 9:15:34 pm

Working a project for a client and cannot find a way to blend the counters of the letters in my text with the background footage. In the 1st attached image, you can see I've created individual masks for each letter and their counters. I've set each of the counters to "Silhouette Luma" in the hopes of making them transparent, but as you can see in the 2nd image the counters just appear black when linked to Premiere. Has anyone else run into this issue and happened upon a solution?

I guess I don't understand what you mean by the term, "counters". I see no numbers.

I DO see text over a background. If the text has no background, you can do whatever you want with it. If you're working with a single footage layer that has the text incorporated into the background, you've got some challenges.
Your task will then be to isolate the text from everything else.

In typography, counters are the enclosed spaces inside of letters -- like the hole inside an O.

How are you constructing your letters that the counters are solid in the first place?

You could Extract, a luma matte, or the free Unmult effect from Red Giant Software to remove the black pixels instead of the silhouette alpha blend mode (which is dependent on the layer beneath and will not work across dynamic link).

My apologies; here is the screenshot I originally meant to post. When linked with Premiere, the transparent counters appear black.

Right, thanks.

I'd suggest you try using Extract or luma mattes to create the transparency -- or maybe describe more about how you're making the letters in the first place, as we might have some other suggestions.

Walter's advice is the best you're going to get. It will NOT be easy separating the text from that background.
