Why is AE preview so slow now?
on Jul 27, 2018 at 3:14:26 pm

In the old days, if I did a RAM preview it might take a long time to render the frames, but once they were rendered it played back in real time.

Now, no matter how powerful my computer is, RAM preview is just crummy. Sometimes it starts playing well, then goes slo-mo, then speeds up, then goes slo-mo again. This is true of all the computers I use, Windows, Mac, all of varying power.

I can't remember what AE version this began with.

A few years ago, there was a time of "multiprocessor" rendering that you could turn on and off, plus a background rendering thing that would cache frames while you worked, etc. Those seemed to have issues, but I don't remember playback ever being so terrible.

Is this a known issue or is there some setting I'm unaware of?

Well, are you shooting with the same camera as you used in Days of Yore? I bet not.

Remember that AE deals in pixels, and a 4K image has 4 times the number of pixels as an HD image.

Great point... projects are bigger and more complex for sure. But my computer is also 10x as powerful.

But even without video footage, and it's just mograph, playback is bad.

I'm caching to nice SSD as well. Doesn't make sense to me, especially when it slows down and speeds up as it plays back the ram preview.

Again... happening on all computers with different configurations.

There's always the fact that AE CC 2018 is the worst, most bug-ridden version of the software in many a year. If you have a degree in computer science, or could qualify as a corporate IT guy, or have been a consistent AE power user for the past decade, you can probably dope out your particular problem and get better performance.

I happen to work for the company owning the most TV stations on Planet Earth. The folks at the Home Office keep us updated on a whole panoply of software, but they have NOT approved CC 2018 for use on company machines. You can run it on your own personal machine, but you're on your own -- don't expect to get any troubleshooting help from company employees.

I think that speaks volumes about the current state of Adobe software.
