Banknote/passport safety hologram style effect
on Jun 15, 2018 at 3:28:45 pm

Hey all,

Can anyone think of a good way to achieve banknote/passport safety hologram effect in AE, something like this (but animated in AE): https://www.bankofcanada.ca/banknotes/vertical10/

It would have to change colours as the object animates..

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
PJ

Basically you have a layer that has a still image with dark bluish gray at the sides, light bluish grey in the middle and the colors of the rainbow in between them. This layer is moved at multiple of the rotation speed in the opposite direction as the object is turned. This is revealed through a track matte in the shape of the hologram, giving the apparency of a reflection. In this example the main hologram consists of two such effects offset so that different colors "reflect" at different angles.

Sounds interesting! Would you be able to make an example and post it over? I don't quite get where the coloured layer sits in 3D space in relation to the background and the track matte?

The colored layer doesn't really sit in space relative to the mask. Think about a real reflection - it's back behind you somewhere, on a different plane. Its has more to do with simply moving the color element within the masked area so that it feels like its a reflection. With the bill spinning, think of the colored layers as a cyc around the environment. As the bill spins you will see "reflected" the far left of the cyc then whats behind you then the far right. So you can simulate the effect by dragging the color layer left to right through the mask area(in 2D). For extra realism put a cosin function on the move so that it changes speed as the bill spins.

Kinda like this, the basic idea without anything fancy.

(You can't rotate it more than 90 degrees in the current form.)
