Add work area to render queue, then select a new work area and add that to the queue as well and then set off batch

There's going to be a separate post about why I want to do this but getting right to the nub of the problem, I want to know how to queue up sections of a composition for rendering, not the whole thing.

I set the work area to the duration of a selected layer and add it to the render queue, but if I do that same action again, the new position of the work area becomes applicable to the items already in the queue meaning the same work area rendered out multiple times and all the previously selected work areas ignored.

If you select the render settings for each cued item you can change the time span settings to custom and then choose your render "area".

-- OR --

You can duplicate the comp for each work area you want to render, set the work area for each, then add 'em to the Render Queue.

Each way works. So you get to choose.

... or you could use a script to manage the render sections, and make the process more easily repeatable.

I use Queue_Comp_Sections from Christopher Green's Ae script collection (if it's helpful to you, click the donate button and send him a token of your appreciation):

Or you can get Queue Work Area from Aescripts:

Another option is to send the renders to AME.
