How to make image gradually appear through paper
on Feb 5, 2018 at 9:16:48 pm

The effect I am trying to achieve is to have an object gradually appear through a piece of old paper, almost like a ghost coming through a wall (or something rising up from water). I have a 2D image that I would like to have extruded so that I can place it in 3D space and alter the paper through Z space. Or is there another way?

At the moment, it's either behind or in front. I want certain parts of the image to come through first, then gradually all the image comes through. I've tried animating masks / scale but it's a bit crude. Is there another way or any other suggestions?

The techniques for doing what you want haven't changed.

In 2010, people walking through text was a popular but short-lived effect.
They realized it took a lot of time to animate those masks! They also realized that a fast walk-through was better -- the animated masks could be off a bit and no one would notice.

So are you suggesting that animated masks is the way to do this effect, and just make sure it's paced to "cover the joins" so to speak? I did search on here before and came across a thread about walking through a wall, but the podcast isn't available, but I'm guessing it's similar.

If I could create a ..... ooh I've just thought of something. Maybe convert the image (as it has alpha layers) into a black and white image and blobberise it, then use that as mask to the original.

Yep! Just tried it and it works, bit of scale as well, looks like it's rising up through the paper.

Thanks Dave, always good to bounce ideas :)
