Morphing Multiple Shapes Into One

Hello Creative Cow Forums,

First off, let me say thanks for all your support and dedication. The information provided by this community has been immensely helpful in starting my After Effects journey.

So... I'm looking for advice on an animation where multiple shapes combine to morph into a letter, as per my example here (which still needs polishing).

In this project, I made the pattern in Photshop, traced it in Illustrator, and after Importing into AE, I keyframed the Path, Position, Scale, and Rotation of each with the motion I set up in Turbulent Displace.

-Any recommendations for alternate ways to transition the multiple shapes into one (letter) as seen here? I've been recommended to 'fake it' with roughen edges; I've been playing with this and it's certainly promising but I'm open to all suggestions of course.

Let me know what you think- All advice/criticism is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
