How to make this seemingly simple smoke effect from Twin Peaks?
on Oct 1, 2017 at 6:23:24 pm

Hi everyone,

I have a request: could someone tell me a way to achieve the "tulpa smoke" effect from Twin Peaks S03?
Can it be done with an AE integrated effect or is it a specific expression?

I couldn't find a video clip yet which would greatly help I'm sure but if you're a TP fan you know what I'm talking about ☺

Thank you !

B

Hi Roei,

Yes, I finally found one on youtube!
It's the bit with the head turning into black smoke that starts at 1:37.

Thanks so much!

Sorry, but that's a link that leads nowhere.

Are we talking a about the original Twin Peaks in the '90's or that new one?

You should use a particle system, like Particular or CC Particle World.

Here's a quick tutorial:

Hi Richard,

In the surrealist context of the series, in season 3, it works greatly as most of the effects are quite naive and direct/brutal in a way, which is very refreshing and unexpected. Well, this is David Lynch at work here and it's great to see that in a TV show.
Episode 8 though is a CGI artistic masterpiece, completely mindblowing.

Thank you, I will try that!

Best,

B
