Tracking and Digitally Retouching a Mask

Hey everyone, another head-related tracking question.

In this film I shot, there is a character who wears a mask attached to a tight fitting hood the entire time. At some points when she turns, the seam where the mask attaches to the head is kind of distracting and I've been messing around with ways of retouching it so that it looks like the mask is part of her actual head.

There's also a character who's face is digitally edited to be an eyeless, monstrous grin. The shot I whipped up looks good on its own, but when he talks or moves his head its obvious it's a still image tracked onto a head.

So far the main things I've attempted with both of these is:
-load frame into photoshop
-edit the frame
-bring back into after effects
-track the shot, attached frame and mask it out

The immediate problem with both is head turning and lots of movement, it's very clearly not three dimensional. I'm okay with it being very stylized but I don't want it to look cheap. I have very very limited experience with 3D, but I do have Element. Is there any way to do this with just mocha and AE, or is 3D necessary?

Thanks guys!

I've attached pics - VERY rough effects, obviously.

If you have Element, you might do something that Andrew Kramer did at 6m 53s:

Leopy.
