Realtime Stroke Update for Animating Character
on Jun 27, 2017 at 4:17:15 pm

Hi,

So I'm working on this project that has a character running on a track. I've animated the character, however the illustrator has added these outer lines to the character that need to animate with it. I tried stroke, but the stroke effect sticks to the character. Reference image below.

Please help!!

You can animate a shape layer with a stroke and transparent fill. If the animation cycles, you can cycle your outline too.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for responding. The thing is I'm not using a shape layer, they're all pre-composed individual layers. Any other ideas?

This is a nice script, Mark. Not what I'm looking for though. Michael figured out a good technique for me to use. Thank you for your time, Mark.

If it has a transparent fill, the animated shape layer will ONLY make an outline. You a line, correct? You can do it that way.

Or you can animate a mask on a solid and use the Stroke effect.

Either way will work.

Duplicate your running character.
Blur it.
Use levels on the alpha channel to crush it to wider than it originally was.
Use the Vegas effect to stroke the alpha. (Adjust the settings in the Vegas effect so you only have one line and full opacity on the whole thing instead of the default bunch of dotted fading lines.)
