script for fade to black transitions
on May 28, 2017 at 7:06:57 am

Hey guys! I'm editing some videos at the moment which have a huge amount of fade to black transitions. Since obviously adding those by hand is very tedious I'd like to write a script making my life easier. I'm familiar to programming/scripting and even to JavaScript, but I have no knowledge whatsoever of the AE api.

Here's what I want to achieve in particular:
At the in-point of the selected layer set the opacity to 0%, at 5 frames after the in-point of the selected layer set the opacity to 100%.
At the out-point of the selected layer set the opacity to 0%, at 5 frames before the out-point of the selected layer set the opacity to 100%.

Here's what I need to know in order to complete the script:
1) How do I properly reference the currently selected layer/footage item?
2) How do I reference frames properly in relation to in- and out-point?
3) How do I add keyframes using a script?

I've tried googleing all of these, but I always end up skipping through tutorials trying to find the bit of information I need and mostly not finding anything, wasting a lot of time. I'd greatly appretiate help with any one of the questions above!

Regards, Max

Apply the "Fade In+Out - frames" animation preset from the "Effects & Presets" panel. It does exactly what you describe with an opacity expression.
