Creating Visible Smells

Hey guys need some advice

Im making this post across 3ds max, C4d and After effects as i dont know which program to use for this in case one is better.

I need to create a visual representation of smells (for instance seeing a fart)
They need to be able to be manipulated as if being blown away with a hand.
What technique would be the best to create this and would After Effects be better than the other 2 stated above.

Thanks guys just a general question any feedback would help 😃
cheers

My first inclination would be to use particles (even if they end up post processed so they don't necessarily look like particles in the final result). But I suspect the particles that come standard with AE are perhaps not feature rich enough to pull it off well so probably (in AE at least) I would use a 3rd party AE plugin particle effect.

I'd say you need to answer this first: what, in your mind's eye, does a fart look like?

Opinions vary, so your input is crucial. Once we have it, we can get down to business.
